England and Wales logistics

When flying to Europe, the most obvious place to fly into is London. We found this the cheapest option with Norwegian Airlines being a very affordable airline from New York JFK to London Gatwick. It is a bit of a mission to get from any of the airports into town, so be mindful of that. We were lucky enough to be staying with friends in London and Bristol during our time in England, which was once again great for the local tips and also saved on accommodation. Once you have a spot in London it is very easy to get around, with the tube connecting you to all the hot spots. We opted for Mega bus between the cities as you can get extremely low fares ($10NZ London -> Cardiff, $6NZ Cardiff -> Bristol). Much cheaper than travelling by train, and pretty comfortable. Only issue is traffic, so don’t choose the bus if you are on a tight schedule. We found prices here pretty similar to NYC, which is to be expected. In Cardiff we opted for Aaron Wise Serviced Rooms, which was great as it had everything you needed, was central and a good price. Weather warning – even though it is meant to be summer, pack for the cold!

Top tips

  • You can use any card that has pay wave for the tube if you need
  • Plenty of free sights to see in London if you are willing to just walk around
  • Jimmy Mac runs a great downtown tour if you get a chance
  • You can have a cheap lunch/dinner by buying a few things from the super market and taking it to the park. Drinks included!
  • Make sure you’ve got a wallet that can store a lot of coins!
  • Aways take a rain coat or umbrella with you
