Our two travel days were pretty hectic and after arriving in this beautiful village we decided to just enjoy the next two days walking through the area.
James and I explored the Ortigia Street Markets where we gathered some produce for breakfast and dinner! We had a coffee at Fratelli Burgio before exploring the village. There are really really great stalls here, we ended up buying a retro coffee pot and some tiles. James was very keen to try some squid from Fisheries and an arancini ball (cannot remember the name) as they are famous here. He rated them quite high 8/10! I was a little to hot so had a MASSIVE dark chocolate gelato for lunch which was YUM.
The Greek castle is a must see. You can walk through most of it and see the beautiful vantage points over the city. After a busy day of walking we enjoyed our home cooked melanzane.

We were feeling adventurous and walked to the archaeological park in Syracuse. It’s about 2.5kms in the heat and there isn’t too much shade at the park. This was built in 100AD and includes a Greek and Roman amphitheater, The Ear of Dionysus and other caves. It is really amazing that these sites are so close to modern-day cities and it is hard to imagine that people have lived in these areas for thousands of years. The most impressive site would have been the Greek Amphitheater, but as they still use this for performances…. it was more of a building site. After being spoilt by a number of un-touched ruins we didn’t spend too much time there.
It was our last night with Emma and Jeremy and we celebrated our great trip in style. We wandered through town before getting a drink at Maniace which has the view of the castle, really worth seeing the sunset here! Dinner was at Ristorante don Camillo. This place was lovely and very fine dining we really treated ourselves with a starter, main and dessert along with complimentary wine and of course a digestivo.
